Coolant Level Subaru Outback Forums Yes in the summer or in hot weather the overflow tank seems to lose coolant due to evaporation more quickly than most cars. the way the tank is though, just a few ounces makes the level change quite a bit, so anyways i top mine off with distilled water, maybe an ounce every couple months, others use subaru premix most dealerships will top it off for you for free but i avoid the dealership if. Subaru's recommendation for coolant level is a) check level when engine is cold, b) if coolant level is at or near the low mark add fluid to the full mark. i keep mine at the full mark when cold, every six months or so adding subaru's proper coolant as necessary usually only an ounce or two at most.
