Hbcus Are Needed Now More Than Ever Hbcus outperform non hbcu institutions in retaining and graduating first generation, low income african american students. historically black colleges and universities (hbcus) have long been pillars of education, opportunity, and progress. Stocker’s journey is far from over, and she serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power and relevance of hbcus. hbcus have much to teach us all about how to ensure educational equality for black students specifically, and even for first generation and low income students, more generally, who are overrepresented at hbcus.

Historically Black Colleges And Universities Hbcus Students College graduates, in general, enjoy higher incomes, greater intergenerational wealth, better health care, and enhanced quality of life, and few institutions can match the job that hbcus do in achieving these results for the first generation college students they serve. These results suggest that hbcus, particularly less selective hbcus that enroll black students with lower sat scores, perform an outsized role in improving the educational and economic outcomes of first generation and low income students.
