Lifespan The Institute Of Canine Biology Lifespan and size smaller dogs live longer than large dogs. this is a graph of the data above, plotted against the average weight of the breed (from jones et al 2008). another version of the graph above, using only the data in solid symbols (see legend of fig 4 above), along with the regression equation for data (by beuchat). There is a strong negative correlation between body size and lifespan in dogs, but it is unknown whether the higher rate of aging in large dogs is due to body size per se or some other factor associated with large size.
Lifespan The Institute Of Canine Biology
Lifespan The Institute Of Canine Biology Information about canine biology and genetics. Carol beuchat, phd, vertebrate biologist and founder of the institute of canine biology, is passionate about using information obtained through canine population genetics to breed healthier purebred dogs. population genetics is defined as the study of allele frequency distribution and change as a result of evolutionary processes. Much ink has been spilled arguing about the health of mixed breed and purebred dogs. i haven't traced the history of this debate, but i imagine it has been fueled by two issues: first, the high burden of genetic disorders in purebred dogs, and second by the sentiment of some that people should adopt shelter dogs instead of purchasing a purebred. the argument from one side is that mixed breed. Litter size & lifespan data from leroy g & x rognon 2013 breeding practices according to breeds, time and place, and consequences. 6th tuft's canine & feline breeding and genetics conference, sept 27 29, 2013, boston.

In bernese mountain dogs, each 10% increase in coi reduces lifespan by 200 days. for a dog with coi of 30%, that's a reduction in lifespan of almost two years. so how much inbreeding is too much? now that's the million dollar question. if inbreeding was only good, animal breeders would be merrily inbreeding and the animals would be thriving. This is a single, very long graph that i have broken into three. note the y axis scale is different in each (top: 0 85; middle: 0 20; bottom: 0 10) lifespan cancer data for mortality from cancer and median age at death from cancer (median means half of the animals live longer, and half of the animals have shorter lives).
